September 15th marks the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month leading to the 15th of October. We use this month to celebrate and recognize Hispanic culture and history. SOAR stars will represent our school in the Antelope Valley Latino Knowledge Bowl on September 13, 2023! Our school will compete at Palmdale High School at 5:00. The school with the most guests will be awarded the 2023 BMG Award and a prize. Be sure to show your support to our SOAR stars!!
The Latino Knowledge Bowl is a competitive competition that challenges all of its participants. Teams from all around the AV Union High School district will compete in categories such as Outstanding Women, Latino Inventors, Flags and Countries, etc. Five of our very own outstanding SOAR Stars will be representing our school! One of the members, Teah Tyson shares, “The preparation for the Latino Knowledge Bowl has been going well! The team has been working hard to review and practice the different categories of knowledge that will be included in the competition…We’re excited to put all of our hard work to the test at the competition, and we’re confident that we’ll do our best to represent our school and community”. Studying every day since the creation of this team, they are putting forth their best, just as we should by showing our utmost support!

Now for a little Hispanic history:
Rosita Dolores Alverio, better known as Rita Moreno, is a Puerto Rican-American actress who is the first Hispanic woman to ever receive an Oscar. Moreno began entertaining at a very young age and performed on Broadway at thirteen. Although Moreno took on fairly notable roles in the past, her most famous role was her performance as Anita in West Side Story. Rita Moreno’s role as Anita in West Side Story earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and she later received the highly esteemed EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) down the road in her career. Moreno’s legacy goes on to inspire many Hispanics like her through the beauty and grace exhibited in her every performance.
