Generational Stories

Generational stories are stories that older people, often family members, tell younger generations. They share important experiences, traditions, and lessons from the past. These stories help preserve family history and teach values to the younger generations. These stories can be passed down through storytelling, conversations, and, in some cases, they might be written down.
Mr. Herron speaks about a family story/event. During get-togethers, he and his family enjoy hosting mini “talent shows” for the kids. He remembers being involved and being able to share his love for music and dance with his family. Taking inspiration from figures like Michael Jackson. Now, his kids are able to show off their moves in front of family and friends. This allows Mr. Herron to get together with his family and bond over their shared love of dance, and connect with each other through their artistic side.
Chisimdi Chukwuemeka says a generational story that impacted her was her grandma owning a restaurant and how she overcame the hardships that came with that. She says she feels she can learn from that and use it as motivation.
This story has shaped her into the mother she is today, largely due to her husband's family in Jamaica. His family owned a sugar cane field, which was once a plantation acquired through a series of events. However, going from white people owning the plantation to then turning into the hands of the family through hard work and constant struggles, it became a source of pride. Some members of the family used the money from the sugar money to open bakeries and it changed the trajectory of life for the family in Jamaica, and this inspired Ms. Dawes to pass down stories to her children and make their culture known from both sides of the family and know the hard work their ancestors worked, so that her children know they apart of the soil and land in Jamaica.
Generational stories can often teach values that include hard work, respect, unity, resilience, and much more. These stories can help younger generations make better and more informed decisions based on the different experiences, successes, and mistakes they may hear about.
