What is Oral Tradition?

Oral tradition is the practice of passing stories, history, knowledge, beliefs, and customs by word of mouth from one generation to another. The older generation often carries the tradition and responsibilities of passing down oral tradition to the younger generation. Oral tradition is found in virtually any culture across the world, and many families carry a unique story passed down from their ancestors. In fact, before writing became a part of languages, oral tradition was the only way of passing down culture, traditions, and stories. But even now, oral tradition still plays an intricate part in many people's lives; it preserves cultural identity, teaches morals and values, entertains, and educates younger generations.

The Vasquez Rocks are a rock formation that is located in northern Los Angeles County, California, in the Sierra Pelona Mountains. The area is a county park called the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. The rocks are a tilted sandstone formation, formed around 25 million years ago. Many find the steep, angular shape of the rocks interesting. The Vasquez Rocks have appeared in numerous movies, TV Shows, commercials, and other films. Some, including Star Trek, The Flintstones, and Michael Jackson's music video for "Black or White". Many visitors come here to hike, rock climb, picnic, or just enjoy the view.
