Importance of Club Participation
Updated: Sep 29

Between managing homework, keeping up with friends, and getting enough sleep, your high school schedule might already feel packed to the brim. When announcements for different club events are mentioned on the current week’s broadcast, it's fair to ask whether joining one is worth the extra effort or just another box to check. While school is primarily about academics and maintaining overall grades, clubs offer personal growth, social, and real-world experience that standard classroom lectures simply cannot match.
Clubs help develop parts of yourself that your classes can’t reach. You can’t always follow your interests and passions in class because you are obligated to follow a teacher-assigned, bureaucratic syllabus. The difference with a club is that it offers the opportunity to learn about subjects that are informative and fun. In a class, you are obligated to take notes to study for a test. In clubs, you literally are doing the things that you’ll study for in college. Whether you’re planning and debating the merits of an issue or you’re constructing and programming a robot to do your bidding, clubs help give you an edge when you’re pursuing a career or deciding what you want to major in.
Joining clubs also offers the opportunity to make new friends outside your immediate social circles. Most students sit comfortably in their social group made up of friends they made in middle school. What’s cool about clubs is it gives you the opportunity to make friends that are either older or younger than you. You learn social skills, like how to cooperate and communicate, with people that you may never interact with outside of school. These skills will benefit you for the rest of your life.
Involvement in student activities is vital for college and career preparation because it provides opportunities to develop essential leadership skills. Participating in student activities helps students learn how to effectively manage and coordinate activities. Student activities develop other essential skills for career and college preparation, including interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Through student activities, participants learn how to plan and manage their time to achieve set goals. This is instrumental to career and college preparation.
Participating in school activities helps students develop socially, mentally, and emotionally. Students participate in activities that assist them in the development of skills needed to deal with their stress. In today's educational environment, students are under increased academic demands. Participating in student activities provides a positive alternative to studying for academic demands. Student activities assist students in the development of their social, mental, and emotional health. Participating in student activities helps students develop interest in positive social activities and supports the development of citizenship skills.
